In the queen-rook staircase, the rook leads the attack. The queen protects from behind while the rook delivers checks on adjacent ranks.
Which piece should be closer to the enemy king in a Q+R staircase?
The rook moves in front of the queen, staying protected. The staircase follows immediately.
How do you set up the staircase with Q+R?
When the pieces are not aligned for a standard staircase, the ladder mate is an alternative. The queen and rook zigzag, walking the king down the board. The ladder begins. Queen and rook alternate, controlling successive ranks in a zigzag pattern.
This position is nearly identical, but the king is on b5 instead of b4. If you blindly follow the ladder pattern, you may stumble into stalemate.
